How to use Canon Speedlites

Quite a while ago, flashes were quite simple to master, of course with limited options.  One just slid the flash onto his/fer hotshoe and took the photo.
With new technology and smarter flashes these days are long gone.  Most Speedlites have a variety of settings, LCD screens, lengthy menus, and are able to communicate with other Speedlites too.
We found a very interesting seminar, jam packed with information on how to use your Speedlite.
It's two hours long, but very worth watching!

World Photography Day Competition - please read well!

Hello everyone!

It's that time of the year again, and this time around it's going to be even bigger.  Not only are we going to give a fantastic €1000 voucher to our WPD winner; but we will also be including a category for photo lovers who have a compact camera!
The lucky winner from the compact camera category will take home the new EOS 650D + 18-55 IS II, a Canon backpack, and an 8gb memory card, worth €1000.

Here's all the details, and what to do to take part.  Please take your time to read carefully.

Wednesday 18th July:
Competition launches TODAY!  Please submit one photo (choose one category) and label your image as 'Competition: Compact/SLR category' depending on the category you are eligible for.   Photos should be posted on our facebook page (CanonMalta.com) & should be in a format which will be suitable for printing in A3 format.
Monday 30th July:

Competition closes at noon.  Entries submitted after this time will not be accepted.
Wednesday 1st August:
Final 15 in each category will be announced on Facebook.  The finalists will be chosen by our panel of judges.

Finalists will be asked to contact Avantech and send over a digital copy of their photo, along with their contact details - so please watch our facebook page!
Finalists will be asked to print their photo A3 size and mount their photo and to bring their entry to the Avantech premises in San Gwann.  Any photos brought in which are not of good printing quality, requested size and/or other requirement will not be allowed to participate any further.  All entries must arrive at our premises until the 8th of August.

Thursday 9th August:
The finalists' photos will be exhibited at the Avantech shop Monday-Friday 8am to 4.30pm.  The public will be invited to vote for their favourite entry in each respective category.  The public will count for 20% of the final votes.

One of the voters will be drawn to win a 200 Euro voucher for Canon photo-video products from Avantech Ltd.

Wednesday 22nd August:
Public voting & exhibit closes.  Our panel of judges will  judge the final entries at a private event and the winners will be announced.

  

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY ’12 COMPETITION TERMS & CONDITIONS

1.    The subject for the World Photography Day Competition is open.

2.    Entrants can upload one photo on our facebook page, up until noon 30th July.  Please include subtitle ‘competition- SLR/compact category’ one each photo.  Each entrant can only compete in one category.

3.    The competition is open to Maltese Islands residents only. Employees of Avantech Ltd., as well as their immediate families are not eligible to enter.

4.    Entries will be judged by a panel of judges. The judges will select a shortlist of fifteen photographs (the 'Finalists').  They will consider a range of factors including technical ability, composition, creativity    and photo appeal/impact.

5.    The Finalists will be asked to email a copy of their photo, which will be checked (EXIF data) so we can confirm that each photo has been submitted into the suitable category.  Should we see that any photo has been shot using an SLR when it has been submitted into the compact category, the entrant will be immediately disqualified.

6.    The finalists have to present a mounted print of their image at the Avantech premises by Wednesday the 8th of August at 4pm.  Any finalists who fail to present their work in the requested size or quality will be disqualified.

7.    The general public will be invited to vote for the Finalist they like the best at the Avantech premises, when the finalists are being exhibited from the 9^th till the 22nd of August.  The public will be asked to fill in a form and answer a skill question; one of the voters will be drawn to win a 200 Euro voucher for Canon hardware products from Avantech Ltd.  The public will count for 20% of the final votes.

8.    The competition winner in the SLR category will receive a prize of 1,000 Euro voucher worth for Canon hardware products from Avantech Ltd. The winner of the compact category will receive an EOS 650D + 18-55IS with a backpack.

9.    Prizes are as stated and cannot be sold or transferred.

10.  In the event of a technical problem or evidence of impropriety with regard to the public’s vote, the judges shall have the final decision.

11.  All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all photographs entered.  Further, entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.

12.  Prior to submission, entrants must not have offered any of their entries for sale, been paid for any publication of any of their entries or won or been a runner up in any other photographic competition with any of their entries.

13.  Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit to Avantech Ltd. By entering the competition all entrants grant to Avantech Ltd. the right to publish and exhibit their photographs on Facebook, the Avantech website, CanonMalta.com blog, CanonMalta.com webpage, and any other medium seen fit to promote the competition and event

14.  By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and Avantech Ltd. reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if Avantech has reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules.

15.  Avantech Ltd. reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter any of the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.

Canon wins six honours at the 2012 TIPA Awards

16 April 2012 – Canon today announces the company has been awarded six separate honours  by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) – Europe’s leading photo imaging and press association. Designed to recognise the best products launched in the preceding year, the TIPA Awards are considered the most coveted imaging honours worldwide. The 2012 awards again acknowledge the quality present across Canon’s wide portfolio, including the revolutionary new Cinema EOS range.
Comprising editors from leading photography titles worldwide, the TIPA panel meets annually to discuss the latest products, taking everything from innovation to design and overall product quality into account. The panel selects and acknowledges the outstanding imaging products from the previous 12 month period, and this year awarded prestigious accolades to the following Canon products:

Best Expert Compact Camera: Canon PowerShot G1 X
Image quality is often associated with interchangeable lenses, but the truth is that these two options are not necessarily linked. Canon has realized that many photographers do want DSLR-like image quality, but in a compact camera style body with an excellent fixed zoom lens. The PowerShot G1 X features a large 4:3 aspect ratio 14.3 MP CMOS sensor measuring 18.7mm x 14mm – similar in size to the APS-C sensors used in EOS DSLR models. The print head produces 1-picolitre droplets and delivers up to 9600dpi print resolution. The 6-ink system includes Pigment Black, Dye Black, Magenta, Cyan, Yellow and Grey ink, which produce a grain free, smooth colour 10x15 cm photo in just 20 seconds. Best Video DSLR: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
The Canon EOS 5D Mark II changed the landscape of digital photography. No longer are digital still and video two separate worlds, shot with two distinctly different systems. The EOS 5D Mark III further improves this experience with a newly designed 61-point AF and 63-zone metering system, and a new 22 MP sensor with an incredibly high ISO sensitivity. Best Professional Videocamera: Canon EOS C300 Digital Cinema Camera
To implement the revolutionary C300, Canon called upon expertise from diverse fields including sensors, image processors and optics. The result is landmark video camera technology available in two versions: EOS C300 with an EF interchangeable lens mount and EOS C300 PL with a PL mount. A high-resolution 8.3 MP Super 35mm-equivalent CMOS sensor has been especially developed for the system. Both versions feature modular architecture and are accompanied by a new range of video lenses.
